The Office of the Undersecretary of Shipping has given Marport approval to train IMDG (International Maritime Dangerous Goods), making it the first port in Turkey to receive such authority.
The 84th session of the International Maritime Organization Maritime Safety Committee (IMO MSC) made changes regarding the International Maritime Dangerous Goods – IMDG), which regulates the handling of hazardous materials during sea transport. This change made IMDG code training obligatory for shore personnel who are handling hazardous cargo as of 1 January 2010.
The Office of the Undersecretary of Shipping requested training content from experts who could offer this training, and evaluated their content with the subject headings that it had identified.
After the evaluation, the program prepared by Marport was approved. As a result, between 1st and 5th of March a group of participants from the Office of the Undersecretary of Shipping will be instructed about the training program prepared by Marport. At the end of the meeting, the persons presenting the training program will become “trainer instructors”, while the other participants will become certified trainers. After the trainers are authorized, all of Marport’s shore personnel will begin receiving IMDG Code training.
Why is IMDG Code training important?
Port workers must have basic knowledge about safely handling, storing and stacking cargo containing hazardous materials, not only for their own safety, but also to protect sailors and other personnel who are subsequent links in the transportation chain. |
What can happen when cargo containing hazardous materials is handled incorrectly?
• Poisoning
• Skin damage (burns)
• Suffocation
• Abrasion
